Diverticulitis is a condition that affects the diverticula (small, bulging pouches or sacs that grow inside the walls of your colon). Inflamed or infected diverticula cause diverticulitis. The problem affects more than 50% of U.S. adults over age 60, causing severe abdominal pain and possibly needing treatment based on symptoms.
